I have the blog page that I created myself, and I understand that I shouldn’t set it as the Blog page under Reading because that changes the design and then I can’t edit the page. So how do I make sure the new blog posts show up on the page automatically?

You could simply use the “recent post” element and then set the date option to Ascending. This will work for any of the other blog elements as well:
